Parish Councillors

The following are Mersham Parish Councillors:

Gavin Murphy (Chair)

My wife and I have lived in the Village since 2007 and I was co-opted onto the parish council in about 2010. I have worked with several great Parish Councillors over this time on some very rewarding projects.

We have 2 kids, now all grown up, daughter Alex, living in Somerset and working with schools to help kids with mental health difficulties and my son James, just completed his Masters in Physics at Durham Uni.

I love gardening and cycling and am a founder member of the Mersham Cycling Club. Love living in Mersham and serve on the council to help keep is safe.

Peter Hawkins

I have lived in the village for the past 38 years.   This is my second period as a member of the Parish Council.   I love sailing.  My main reason for being on the parish council is to maintain and improve the facilities to benefit Mersham.

Gill McBarnet

I have lived in Mersham with my husband for 22 years.  I worked in the travel industry for most of my career and now work as a part time carer.

I have recently become a church warden for Mersham church and enjoy playing golf,  attending pilates and yoga classes and spending time with family and friends.

I have just become a parish councillor and am keen to contribute ideas to maintain and improve the environment in our village.

Donna Pearson

Has just joined the council as she has an interest in what is going on in the village she has lived in for over 10 years.  Donna owns Charlie the border collie and belongs to the local badminton club and also plays golf and tennis

Stewart Ross

Councillor since May 2020, in this my second spell on Mersham PC.  Retired now for over 10 years, interests include theatre, travel, gardening and grandchildren.  Did voluntary work with CROP until the organisation lost its funding from KCC.  Why am I a Councillor I guess answer is after 40 years in the village I want to ensure that as far as is possible any growth/change recognises the special nature of Mersham village

Kenton Stewart

Lived in the Village 21 years, served as a councillor for 12 years. Joined the parish council to contribute back to the Village, as the Village has given me and my family so much over the years, and I would like current and new residents to enjoy the village as we have over the years. Another objective is to try and maintain the Village as “Village” and to prevent being swallowed up by the ongoing development that surrounds our Parish.

As well as a Full-time job in telecommunications my Interests outside of my voluntary Parish Council activities are, assisting with family run business from our property, Boating breaks, Campervan breaks, Socializing, maintaining our small holding and our current live stock.

Melanie Wells

My husband and I moved to Mersham in 1993 when our eldest son was a year old. Following the
birth of our second son I became a full time mum, having previously worked in finance. Both boys
attended Mersham Primary School and I have very fond memories of serving on the PTA and
Governing Body. I have been a Councillor since May 2020, this being my second time on Mersham
Parish Council. Since September 2021, I have also been the Council’s representative on the village
hall committee. Mersham is a lovely village and I have lived here happily for the past 30 years. I
became a Councillor to help preserve its village status and also to maintain and improve local
facilities for the benefit of everyone.
In my spare time I enjoy travelling, visiting historical places, walking to keep fit, and socialising with
family and friends.

Tracey Block (Clerk)

I have been Clerk to Mersham Parish Council since 2015 (when it was Mersham with Sevington Parish Council).  I have been a Clerk since November 1997 and now Clerk for 7 Parish Councils in the area.  I am the Clerk for Smeeth, Brabourne and Brook with whom Mersham shares the Village Caretaker which makes communication easy between the cluster.

I have lived in Hastingleigh all of my life and moved in to my own home there when I married in 1997.  I am Mum to 4 young people one of whom has started University in Portsmouth in September 2022.  I enjoy crochet and craft as well as family outings.
